Calibration

Calibration plays an extremely important role in measurement technology. During calibration, the difference between the measured value and a known value – say, that of a reference standard – is calculated. This measurement error produced by the instrument must be taken into account when tests are carried out. Without knowing this context, it is simply not possible to measure reliably. The ISO 9001 norm prescribes that measuring devices be calibrated or verified in order to ensure that the results are valid. Furthermore, calibration must be performed either prior to the measurement or at regular intervals. Therefore, every professional measuring instrument should have a calibration function.

The following steps are necessary for calibration:

  • A pre-defined measurement process encompassing:
    • Approach or method
    • Definition of the standards needed
    • Stipulated ambient conditions
  • Operational sequence of the calibration
  • Statistical evaluation of the measured values according to fixed procedure
  • Calibration certificate showing the deviation and uncertainty

FISCHER measurement instruments are very flexible and can be used for various tasks. Thus, during calibration it is important to take into account the specific measuring conditions of the measurement task. This includes for example the type or arrangement of material layers. A general calibration – such as for a scale with normalized weights – is not possible. The calibration would not apply to the specific measurement task. Therefore, for each measurement task there should be a corresponding calibration stored on the device.

Depending on the requirements placed on the calibration, the standards used must also be traceable. These standards have a clear connection to certified primary standards. That means that the measurement deviation of these standards relative to the primary standards is a known quantity that is documented as the deviation and uncertainty.
